Jackknife Your Injury, Our Fight

Midland Jackknife Truck Accident Lawyers

Jackknife accidents are among the most deadly types of truck wrecks. They not only threaten the life of truck occupants, they can also cause catastrophic, if not fatal, injuries to occupants of passenger vehicles, especially when these accidents occur on busier roads.

In fact, according to the latest data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), when jackknife accidents occur, they are nearly four times more likely to be deadly than result in nonfatal injuries.

At Buckingham & Vega Law Firm, our Midland jackknife truck accident lawyers have been dedicated to helping jackknife truck accident survivors, including families who have lost loved ones to fatal wrecks, seek the justice and compensation they deserve.

We know that there is no amount of money that can ever replace a loved one or make up for debilitating, irreversible injuries. We also understand, however, that financial recoveries can be central to receiving the right care and support moving forward. And that can be the key to healing and restoring lives.

How Negligence Can Cause Jackknife Truck Accidents

Although jackknife accidents can be caused by various factors, just some of the negligence-related factors that can contribute to these wrecks may include:

  • Driver impairment and/or distraction – If truckers (or other motorists) are impaired by alcohol, drugs, fatigue or even a distraction, they are far more likely to miss seeing important things, like a changing signal light or stop signs. This can mean that they slam on the brakes at the last minute, which can increase the risk that the brakes will lock up and trailers will swing out from behind the truck, jackknifing toward the cabin.
  • Truck equipment failures – Tire blowouts and brake failure (as well as other equipment failures) can make it difficult to slow, stop or maneuver trucks. If these malfunctions cause the trailer to gain more speed than the cabin, jackknife accidents can happen. While these equipment failures can indicate that trucking companies or truckers have failed to maintain their trucks, they can also arise from the negligence of equipment manufacturers (when equipment is inherently defective or faulty).
  • Overloaded truck – Overweight trucks can naturally be more challenging to stop, slow or maneuver. These trucks can also be more susceptible to equipment failures (like tire blowouts, for instance), as trucking equipment may not be able to bear the extra load. When overloaded trucks cause jackknifes, the driver and/or trucking company may be liable.
  • Unsecured or unbalanced cargo – Unstable cargo can dangerously shift the balance of weight for a truck, increasing the risk of jackknifes (and other truck wrecks). This form of negligence generally comes at the hands of drivers or employees responsible for loading and securing cargo; it can also involve trucking company negligence when, for instance, the company may not have properly trained its employees on how to safely secure and balance cargo.
